I am the only one who
saw. Photos and Essays by Edward Chao
"If the photographer takes the picture, the person who
looks at the picture will know the truth. And will know what he can say
and what he will not say. A liar will come to you and say whatever he
likes, but you know that the person is lying because of the
picture." -Edward Chao, 12 years old
This collection of photos and essays is by a remarkable
twelve year old student in Ghana. Shot and narrated by Eddie
himself.
As Eddie learns to use his camera, a gift that comes attached to an
assignment, he begins to explore and reconstruct his world through a
series of unique photo essays. Edward brings readers into his world,
starting with his friends and the games they play in an abandoned truck
yard. Through his eyes, we meet his grandmother, with whom he lives on
Madina Estates Road in Ghana's capital, Accra. Eddie describes his role
in his household and tackles important social issues, such as comparing
the importance of the farmer and the trader in Ghanaian society.
On a walking tour from his grandmother's to his uncle's place, we see
what Eddie sees, hear him describe the smells in the streets and the
people he encounters every day in his neighborhood. Later, as Eddie
finds himself a witness to an emergency, he uses his essays to delve
into the complex moral dilemna that faces journalists and photographers
worldwide: should I document suffering or should I go and help?
Deviwo Projects is about new narrators creating new stories.
This is one story you can't afford to miss.
And in case you're wondering if you really can't afford it, remember
that all book proceeds benefit a scholarship fund for Eddie and other
children living in Madina, Accra.
